MTA Issues Agencywide Mitigation Measures Following New York City Drought Warning

New Regulations Aim to Reduce Authority's Water Usage During First NYC Drought Warning in 22 years

MTA Monitoring Drought Conditions and Will Adjust Guidelines as Needed

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced a new set of water usage and safety measures in partnership with New York City Mayor Eric Adams to help alleviate drought conditions in the New York metropolitan area. These rules apply to all MTA agencies and comply with the City's Drought Management Plan.

Fleet washing is being reduced for Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad trains. New York City Transit (NYCT) Subways will restrict fleet washings by 50 percent and prioritize leaks in stations and tunnels. NYCT Buses will be washed every other day. NYCT will utilize the deep wells on Marcy Avenue to fill tankers, if necessary. Washing of MTA-owned vehicles, bridges and tunnels will also be restricted.

"MTA is ready to do its part to reduce water usage during this historic Drought Warning," said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. "Managing impacts of climate change and increasing transit resiliency are always top of mind, and we will work closely with our partners at the City to keep New Yorkers safe."

NYCT, LIRR, Metro-North and Bridge & Tunnel employees are on high alert for potential fires within the system. To reduce the risk of fire, B&T personnel will be actively inspecting sites to ensure hazardous or potentially hazardous materials are being properly stored under and around facilities and crossings. Protocols are in place to quickly extinguish any fires that may start on tracks, as well as transformers and substations.

The MTA will remain in contact with City and State agencies to be ready for any potential changes as conditions evolve.
