The UNM Honors College is challenging student chefs to think "against the status quo" in its upcoming "Chopped"-style cooking contest, "SNAP Smackdown," happening on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the La Posada Dining Hall from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
To receive SNAP benefits, do you have to be "against the status quo?" That is the question and the goal of the Honors College in this unique culinary cookoff. In partnership with the President's office, UNM Food, and Aramark, UNM's food vendor, this event is part of their initiative to de-stigmatize the use of SNAP benefits as part of a class that addresses food insecurities among students.
Dishes for this contest will be cooked up by student chefs using SNAP-approved foods. Winners of the contest will receive a cash prize and cooking items will be available as door prizes. The winners will be selected by a panel of judges using a created rubric to score the best dish. Those in attendance will also have the opportunity to taste the food and take part in the judging process.
SNAP applications will also be available for those wanting to apply for benefits.
The campus community is invited to attend.
