High school students benefit from TSTC grad’s digital media design expertise

(HARLINGEN, Texas) - Some students at La Feria Early College High School are getting a real-world perspective on what it takes to succeed in the world of digital media design from someone who has a degree and professional experience in the field: Texas State Technical College graduate Megan Trevino-Torres.

"I have been teaching graphic design, film, news and merchandise production to all four grade levels for three years," Trevino-Torres said. "My students and I enjoy the creative process when we get to work with our other CTE (career and technical education) teachers on certain projects," she said.

Hector Cazares is principal at La Feria Early College High School.

"Mrs. Trevino-Torres' leadership has created an environment of exploration," he said. "She allows her students to take risks and empowers their learning while exposing them to new experiences."

Before Trevino-Torres graduated from TSTC with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Digital Media Design in 2019, she earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Sul Ross State University and a master's degree in Business Administration from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

She said she decided to study at TSTC to increase her marketing skills.

"I learned a little bit of everything that's involved in the marketing process," she said. "We received critiques about our projects with photography, video and other assignments."

Santiago Villarreal was one of Trevino-Torres' instructors at TSTC.

"Megan's ability to be a visual storyteller became second nature," he said. "Now she's sharing her passion with her high school students."

Besides La Feria Early College High School, Trevino-Torres has worked for the Uvalde Chamber of Commerce, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers professional basketball team, the former RGV FC Toros professional soccer team, the San Benito Chamber of Commerce, and Cross Church in San Benito.

She said TSTC prepared her well for her career.

"The program taught me about many areas of marketing," she said. "I was also a work-study in the print shop (at TSTC) and learned a lot about the print production process. I take my students (on field trips there) so they can learn what I did."

TSTC offers an Associate of Applied Science degree and multiple certificates of completion in Digital Media Design, all fully online.
