Mayor cuts ribbon on affordable housing triplex

Mayor Linda Gorton today joined Gleanings Housing Inc. to cut a ribbon to officially open a new affordable housing triplex in Lexington's East end neighborhood.

"Affordable housing is a pressing need in our city," Mayor Linda Gorton. "This project is designed to help families who are most in need of help." The triplex, with 2 one-bedroom units, and 1 three-bedroom unit, is located at 721 Magoffin St.

The development will provide affordable housing for households in the lowest income bracket, Gorton said. Rent will be set at 30% of household income.

Laura Slaughter, Executive Director of Gleanings Housing, said, "Gleanings Housing believes a flourishing community begins with everyone having a stable place to live. Our mission is to build a community of people who work together to develop housing that is affordable for people with very low incomes. Individuals prosper when their basic needs are met."

Since 2014, the city's Affordable Housing Fund has invested $48.3 million in the construction and/or preservation of 3,500 units. The $48.3 million investment has leveraged another $440 million from private and other public resources.

Work for the triplex began in March 2022 at a cost of $175,000. Volunteers donated their time and talents.

Gleanings Housing was awarded $34,954 for the Magoffin Street Triplex Hardscape Project, through Lexington's Non-Profit Capital Grant Program for FY24-FY25. The Hardscape Project provided for tree removal, replacement of the driveway, parking lot, fencing, sidewalks, and steps, including all the asphalt, concrete, lumber, stone, gravel, hardware, and labor needed to complete the project.

Gleanings was also awarded $16,514 for various appliances for the triplex and one other property, including stackable washers and dryers, refrigerators, stoves, and microwaves.

Kentucky Plumbing in Nicholasville, Medyna Plumbing, Fayette Electric Service, and Mosley Heating & Air donated their expertise to complete the mechanicals for the triplex.

Plumbers & Pipefitters Union, Peterson Electric, and Walmart also donated construction materials.
