The European Commission has launched a coalition to promote financing for energy efficiency initiatives. The aim is to create a favourable market environment for energy efficiency investments and to increase private funding for the sector to help the EU achieve its energy and climate targets for 2030 and 2050. The coalition is involved in both EU-level and national activities.
The European Energy Efficiency Financing Coalition (EEFC) is an initiative launched by the Commission which brings together EU Member States, financial institutions and relevant stakeholders to identify concrete actions to improve private financing for energy efficiency.
The Coalition's activities consist of an EU-wide high-level General Assembly, an expert platform supporting its work and national hubs for energy efficiency financing. Motiva Oy will chair Finland's national hub.
"It is important that, as a leading country in energy efficiency, Finland takes part in this coalition which complements our national efforts. Motiva was a natural choice to lead the national hub for energy efficiency financing. Motiva has extensive skills and a network-like approach to the issue. Their expertise is apparent in the project on the sustainable finance information service and roundtable launched in 2021 and the EU's Sustainable Energy Investment Forums implemented twice," says Päivi Laitila, Senior Specialist at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.
The Coalition will provide Finland more resources for the national activities as well as European views on the issue. At the same time, Finland will have an opportunity to convey to others examples of its financial instruments and, in particular, the seamless cooperation between the financial sector, energy sector experts and various interest groups.
"We are pleased that Motiva will have the opportunity to head Finland's national hub for the European Energy Efficiency Financing Coalition. It will be a natural extension to our work on energy efficiency, energy efficiency agreements and sustainable development. As a state-owned company and an in-house entity of the central government, we are not only an important cooperation partner for different administrative branches but also an independent expert body for others involved in the sector," says Elina Moisio, Chief Executive Officer of Motiva.
The national hub at Motiva will be managed by Expert Kirsi-Maaria Forssell, who is also responsible for Motiva's finance information service and sustainable finance roundtable. The hub aims to continue the cooperation between different sectors in disseminating information on energy efficiency funding, to discuss the needs and challenges related to financing and to provide examples of different projects and operating methods.
