NCCU Law Student Awarded $10,000 Bridging the Dream Scholarship

Kariyona Craighead, a first-year student at the North Carolina Central University (NCCU) School of Lawhas been awarded $10,000 from a Bridging the Dream Scholarship from Sallie Mae, in partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Out of nearly 1,600 applicants nationwide, Craighead is one of just 40 recipients, highlighting her potential to make meaningful contributions to the legal field. The Bridging the Dream Scholarship program aims to support students from under-resourced and underrepresented backgrounds, facilitating their legal education and opening pathways to successful careers in law.

Originally from Concord, North Carolina, Craighead's academic journey began at Appalachian State University, where she majored in political science and consistently achieved the dean's list. She is an active member of her community and a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

"My academic performance has always been my top priority, and the first semester of law school is critical for establishing a strong GPA that appeals to employers," Craighead said. "With this scholarship, I can focus on my studies without the constant worry of tuition payments, ultimately reducing my debt upon graduation."

Craighead plans to specialize as an entertainment attorney or in intellectual property law. Beyond her career ambitions, she aims to leverage her law degree to support young Black women on similar journeys.

"I envision creating a fund or partnering with an entertainment firm to help young women pursue their passions in the arts," she said, emphasizing her commitment to breaking down barriers for those following in her footsteps.

Craighead's path and support from the Bridging the Dream Scholarship highlight the transformative power of educational opportunities for diverse students. As she progresses in her legal education at NCCU, there's no doubt she will emerge not only as a skilled attorney but also as a strong advocate for her community.
