Handover of the G20 presidency from Brazil to South Africa

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, and the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, Ronald Lamola, held a working meeting today, November 21, at the Itamaraty Palace, in the context of the handover of the G20 presidency from Brazil to South Africa.

During the meeting, the ministers underscored the significant contribution of the Global South to the G20, highlighting the sequence of presidencies held by Indonesia (2022), India (2023), Brazil (2024) and, as of December 1st, 2024, by South Africa. They also discussed prospects for the South African presidency and its role in promoting key issues for developing countries, such as sustainable development, social inclusion and global governance reform.

Throughout the day, the meeting brought together representatives from Brazilian government agencies engaged in the activities of the Sherpa and Finance tracks in the areas of communication and logistics of the Brazilian G20 presidency and in the organization of the G20 Social. Discussions provided the South African delegation with a comprehensive overview of the practices, challenges and lessons learned during the Brazilian presidency.

Brazil is thankful to South Africa for the support provided during its G20 presidency and reaffirms its commitment to cooperating with the initiatives and discussions that will be conducted by the South African presidency.
