Seatbelt Use Enforcement Project Begins November 23

Published on November 18, 2024

The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) today announced it will conduct a traffic enforcement project focusing on seatbelt use from November 23 through December 1.

As part of the national Make it Click enforcement program, additional officers will patrol Lincoln employing a zero-tolerance approach to those who are stopped and found to not be using seatbelts. This enforcement effort is made possible by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) Highway Safety Office.

In 2023, 138 (74%) of the 186 fatalities in passenger vehicle crashes in Nebraska were not wearing seat belts, according to NDOT. Nebraska's seat belt use rate is the fourth worst in the nation - at only 77%, compared to the national rate of 90.4%.

With Thanksgiving approaching and more holiday travelers expected on the roads, LPD urges drivers and passengers to buckle up - every trip - every time.
