Trip to Battleground State to Focus on Where Candidates Stand on Key Issues, Stakes of 2024 Election in Less Than Two Weeks

NEW YORK, NY (October 22, 2024) - Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), will travel to Michigan this Thursday as part of the organization's ongoing, non-partisan Get Out the Vote tour with less than two weeks until the pivotal 2024 election. The trip, which will feature members of the Central Park 5, comes just days after Rev. Sharpton sat down for an exclusive interview with Vice President and Presidential nominee Kamala Harris to discuss her candidacy and the issues on the ballot this year for Black Americans.

"Michigan will become the litmus test for the power of Black voters in this election, which is why it is crucial everyone who can vote heads to the polls by November 5^th," said Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of NAN. "Our visit Thursday is our most ambitious yet in this Get Out the Vote tour, where we have already activated Black Americans in Philadelphia and central Ohio. Now, Michigan voters will hear directly about what's at stake if they stay home and how what Donald Trump has actually done to Black men."

Rev. Sharpton will once again be joined by Korey Wise and New York City Council Member Yusef Salaam, two members of the Central Park 5 who were verbally attacked by Donald Trump as they were wrongfully convicted 35 years ago. Trump has refused to walk back his inflammatory statements - or his full-page ad in the New York Times calling for their execution - in the more than 20 years later since they were exonerated. Wise and Salaam, who appeared alongside Rev. Sharpton at the Democratic National Convention this summer, have already shared their personal battles through Trump's verbal attacks.

They will continue to share these stories as they travel through parts of eastern Michigan this Thursday. The tour will begin with townhalls in Pontiac and Flint, followed by a rally at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Rev. Sharpton will wrap up the visit in Detroit with a 5 p.m. rally at Wayne County Community College alongside Marc Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League.
