Farishta Ahrary appointed as new City Auditor by Sacramento City Council

The Sacramento City Council approved the appointment of Farishta Ahrary as the City's new Auditor, marking a significant milestone as she becomes the first woman to serve in the role.

Ahrary, who has served as Interim City Auditor since early 2024, brings over a decade of experience within the Auditor's office, having first joined in 2013 as an entry-level auditor.

Mayor Darrell Steinberg expressed his confidence in Ahrary's abilities following the council's decision. "Unanimously selected by all the members, Farishta has earned our collective confidence and support," Steinberg said. "We warmly welcome her, are excited to work together, and I am confident that she will be a tremendous asset for our city."

Ahrary holds several awards from the Association of Local Government Auditors (ALGA) and has a background in both tax and financial auditing. She is a certified public accountant, a certified fraud examiner, and a certified project management professional.

Ahrary is active in the auditing community having served in various capacities such as a former president of the Golden State Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and currently serves on the ALGA Long Term Planning Committee.

Prior to joining the City, she worked at a local CPA firm performing audits for school districts across Northern California.

"I am honored to be appointed as the Sacramento City Auditor," Ahrary said. "I am excited to continue serving the city of Sacramento and positioning the Office as a trusted advisor to provide both management and the City Council with thorough, insightful analysis that strengthens our City's operations and supports informed decision-making."

As City Auditor, Ahrary will oversee the operations of the Office of the City Auditor, ensuring the City's performance meets established standards and helping guide informed decision-making through audits, financial assessments, and recommendations.

Originally from Afghanistan, Ahrary immigrated to the Sacramento area with her family in 1992. She has spent the majority of her life in the region and holds a Master of Science in Accounting from the University of Phoenix, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of California, Davis.

In her spare time, Ahrary enjoys baking and playing board games with her husband and their twin daughters.
