Gas Odor in the Air on Tuesday, December 17
December 16, 2024

MLGW will perform routine maintenance involving mercaptan near several locations on Tuesday, December 17.

· North Germantown Parkway and Chimneyrock Boulevard

· Seward Rd and George R James Rd

· Highway 269 and Highway 72

· Quince Rd and Wheel Cove

· Airways Boulevard and Stateline Road.

This routine work will start at 8 a.m. and take two hours to complete at each location.

The public in the surrounding area may smell mercaptan in the air. Mercaptan is the chemical odorant that MLGW adds to natural gas to give it the rotten egg/sulfur smell so it can be easily detected.

Depending on the wind/weather conditions, residents and businesses in the vicinity could smell this strong, sulfuric odor during the morning or from the odorant truck as it travels from each point.

Memphis Light, Gas and Water is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving the residents of Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee since 1939.
