There is a new tool available for caregivers of those living with dementia and, with a little familiarity and training, artificial intelligence can make the responsibilities less stressful and easier to navigate.
"Artificial Intelligence (AI) For the Caregiver" will be the topic of the next Wyoming Dementia Together (WDT) Caregiver Network program Wednesday, Nov. 20. WDT is a statewide nonprofit caregiver network offered through the University of Wyoming's Wyoming Center on Aging (WyCOA).
WDT meets by Zoom call every other Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. throughout the year. Programs feature guest speakers and allow time for interaction from those who attend online. Preregistration is required; the Zoom link to each program will be provided by email.
Theresa Robinett, who teaches classes on AI and other subjects at Casper College, will lead the latest program.
"I am going to provide an overview of AI platforms, basic safety with AI and then how caregivers can use AI to offload or streamline daily tasks to be more organized or help with communication," Robinett says. "For example, the caregiver can use AI to create meal plans, shopping lists, medications, schedules, tasks, appointment management and assistance with writing. It's a different type of technology, and it can seem intimidating at first, but AI is a very useful tool."
WDT includes dementia care professionals, licensed clinical social workers, physical and occupational therapists, and caregivers themselves. WDT began meeting in fall 2020 and has since been offering online programming assistance.
WDT programs featured through the end of the year are titled "Peace, Love and Joy in the Holiday Season," Dec. 4; and "Our Gift to You: Ask the Professional Support Team," Dec. 18.
