Minister Mauro Vieira hosts today, November 21st, at the Itamaraty Palace, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Foreign Trade and Federal Cultural Institutions of Belgium, Hadja Lahbib. The foreign ministers will discuss opportunities for deepening bilateral relations, in particular in trade and economy, and issues of global interest. This is the first visit by the Belgian foreign minister to Brazil since 2016.
Minister Lahbib travels to Brazil to take part, on Nov. 23-30, in a Belgian economic mission led by Princess Astrid. The mission will make stops in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and will bring together nearly 300 businesspeople, Belgian authorities and academics. The mission will focus on bioeconomy, port development, food and beverage trade, energy transition, climate, and health.
In 2023, bilateral trade reached USD 6.5 billion, with Brazilian exports totaling USD 3.4 billion. Belgian investments in Brazil amount to USD 5.3 billion (immediate investor criteria) and USD 26.5 billion (ultimate controlling entity criteria), ranking Belgium as Brazil's 22nd and 10th largest investor, respectively.
