Launch of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance recommendations for teaching and learning about the Roma: Lord Pickles’ speech

Good evening, dear colleagues and distinguished guests. Welcome to Lancaster House, a historic venue befitting this important milestone in 's mission.

Tonight, we officially launch the 'Recommendations for Teaching and Learning about the Persecution and Genocide of the Roma during the Nazi Era'.

These recommendations are a testament to years of collaboration between experts, educators, and Roma civil society organisations. They address long-standing gaps in education and remembrance, ensuring that the voices and experiences of Roma victims and survivors are no longer marginalised.

Developed in partnership with Roma civil society and endorsed by 35 governments, these recommendations represent a pivotal step in addressing historical neglect.

Tasked in 2021 by the Athens Plenary, the Committee on the Genocide of the Roma, with support from the Education Working Group, worked tirelessly to bring this resource to life.

I am especially grateful to the project team: Miško Stanišić, Nina Krieger, Karola Fings, Stéphane Laederich, Ruth-Anne Lenga, and Danijel Vojak. Their dedication, alongside input from 12 civil-society organisations, ensured this resource is inclusive, thoughtful, and impactful.

This launch would not be possible without the participation of our partners and the valuable feedback from member countries. I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Permanent Office and our colleagues who have worked tirelessly to bring these recommendations to fruition. The dedication all of you displayed is what makes moments like these possible.

The adoption of these recommendations aligns with 's broader commitment to promoting inclusive education and remembrance. Just as we have done with safeguarding Holocaust sites and improving archival access, tonight's launch emphasises our dedication to addressing historical injustices with tangible solutions.

This evening marks the beginning of a critical dialogue that continues tomorrow at the '3rd International Conference on the Persecution and Genocide of Roma During the Nazi Era'. The conference will explore Roma agency, education, and contemporary challenges, providing a platform for reflection and actionable change.

Let us use this evening to not only celebrate but also to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring these recommendations inspire education, and action. I encourage you to connect with the many dedicated individuals here who have worked tirelessly to bring this resource to life.

Enjoy the reception, and I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow for what promises to be an insightful and inspiring conference.
