LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass today issued a statement following the Port of L.A.'s record-breaking month of September, moving a historic volume of cargo and continuing the Port of L.A.'s ranking as the busiest port in the United States for 24 consecutive years.
"The nation's busiest port had another record-setting month - moving our economy forward while continuing our efforts to build a greener L.A." said Mayor Karen Bass. "This wouldn't be possible without the hard work of ILWU members who keep our Port running. I want to thank the Biden-Harris Administration and EPA Administrator Michael Regan for helping make these achievements possible, and I also want to congratulate Port of L.A. Executive Director Gene Seroka for his efforts."
The Port recently announced that 20% more goods have been moved this year thus far compared to last year. The volume of goods movement in September significantly outpaced last September, marking the close of the busiest quarter ever at the Port.
Recently, Mayor Bass announced she had helped secure the single-largest federal investment in Port operations. Over the past two years, Los Angeles secured nearly $1 billion in funding to reduce pollution in port communities and achieve 100% zero-emission terminal operations by 2030. In 2023, the Port generated $292 billion in trade and handled a total of 8.6 million container units, sustaining its top rank among U.S. ports.
Mayor Bass hosted EPA Administrator Michael Regan in Watts last month as the Mayor continues to lock arms with local, state, and federal officials to create a greener Los Angeles and fight against environmental injustices. Mayor Bass also hosted Administrator Regan in San Pedro in March, where they highlighted upcoming federal investments in zero-emission port equipment and infrastructure, air quality planning projects, and enhanced efforts to protect the health of communities near U.S. ports.
