President Miller suits up for Fire Science training

SMCC President Kristen Miller took experiential learning to new heights by gearing up and stepping into the heat of fire sciences training. President Miller joined students in a fire behavior burn exercise as part of the College's Fire Science program.

The opportunity to participate in the training came from a conversation with adjunct instructor Mara DeGeorge and Fire Science Chair Rob Lindstedt. "They approached me and said, 'Hey, what if we put Kristen in (Mara's) gear and get her in?' I don't think they thought I would say yes, but I did," Miller said with a laugh.

The fire behavior burn exercise allows students to observe and understand how fire evolves, a critical component of their certification. "We're teaching students how fire grows and develops-from ignition to full development-and how to control it," Lindstead explained. "They must familiarize themselves with fire before facing it in real-world emergencies."

Like the students, Miller experienced the intense heat firsthand, up to 1,100 degrees near the ceiling of the controlled burn area. She found the experience eye-opening and inspiring, particularly witnessing the dynamics of fire behavior up close. "I just watched the instructors teach and the students learn, and it was pretty amazing," Miller said. Watching the smoke and the layers it built in the room was impressive. It gave me a new appreciation for what our public servants do. "

SMCC's Fire Science program exemplifies the College's commitment to hands-on education and community impact. The diversity of its students, from high school graduates to military veterans, demonstrates the program's unique ability to meet people wherever they are in life. Lindstead noted, "This program is designed to prepare everyone, from those who have never touched a fire truck to full-time firefighters sharpening their skills."

By stepping into the gear of her students, Miller not only gained firsthand insight into their training but also reaffirmed her belief in SMCC's transformative impact. "I preach the amazing opportunities we offer, but it's important for me to see and feel them, too," she said. "Our students sacrifice so much to be here, and I want to experience what they do to champion their success better."

SMCC's Fire Science program offers students a comprehensive education in fire science and firefighting techniques, including hands-on training in live fire scenarios and fire prevention methods. The program, which awards an Associate Degree in Fire Science, prepares graduates for careers as professional firefighters, fire inspectors, and emergency services professionals.
