Spain’s failure to comply with the Water Framework Directive and the Floods Directive

Spain's failure to comply with the Water Framework Directive and the Floods Directive

15.11.2024

Question for written answer E-002552/2024
to the Commission
Rule 144
Dolors Montserrat (PPE)

The Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) and the Floods Directive (2007/60/EC) ensure 'good qualitative and quantitative health' of European rivers and lakes and are a fundamental part of the European Green Deal, which sets climate and pollution reduction targets. Under these directives, Member States must update and report on their river basin management and flood prevention plans every six years.

In view of this:

  • 1.What is the status of the case opened against Spain in February 2024 for the country's failure to fully report its third river basin management plans and second flood risk management plan?
  • 2.Does the Commission believe that the tragic effects of the recent floods could have been mitigated had the Spanish Government and the EU's own control been more diligent?
