Reflecting on last week's election, I want to start by addressing a common sentiment that I'm sure you've heard before: "My vote doesn't count." Imagine you have loose change in your pocket-pennies, nickels, maybe a dime or two. You have a choice: You could toss it aside or put it in a jar. At first, it doesn't look like much, but over time, those small coins can add up to something meaningful, maybe even a step closer to that family vacation you've been planning. Each vote is a bit like that; alone, it may seem small, but together, they shape our community and our future.
Unfortunately, the notion that individual votes don't matter has led to nearly one-third of eligible Americans to sitting out elections. In the 2024 election alone, 31% of voters believed their votes didn't make a difference, can you believe that? But last week's results prove how impactful every vote is, and how critical civic duty remains.
On November 5th, Americans flooded the polls, and Missouri was no exception. Our great state saw a tremendous turnout as early and Election Day voters came together, making their voices heard. This wasn't just about changing the name on the door of the White House-it was about addressing the pressing concerns that have touched so many families across Missouri and the country. Rising costs have forced Americans to make tough choices, from forgoing small luxuries to tapping into savings or even retirement accounts to cover daily expenses. Voting gives us the power to influence the policies that shape these issues.
President Donald Trump's 2024 victory demonstrates how votes across every community make a difference. This election saw an estimated 158 million Americans casting their ballots, creating one of the most diverse coalitions in recent history. Trump's outreach efforts, including a stronger focus on economic and national security issues, struck a chord with voters of all backgrounds. In rural Missouri, the support for Trump was overwhelming, with rural voters showing up in large numbers, adding momentum to his national victory. While our urban and suburban areas reflect different priorities, this election reminds us how every community plays an essential role in shaping the future.
As we look ahead to the coming four years, I urge everyone to reflect on the power of their vote, whether in local or presidential elections. From rural towns to bustling cities, your voice truly makes a difference. Just as loose change can eventually fill a jar, your vote can contribute to meaningful change, ensuring our state and nation continue to reflect the values we hold dear. Thank you for your commitment to our country and for making the 2024 election a powerful testament to the importance of each and every vote.
