Washington, DC-Below is a statement by Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther, President of The U.S. Conference of Mayors, on today's mass shooting in Madison, Wisconsin.
"America's mayors are reeling from yet another shooting, this one in Madison at the Abundant Life Christian School that has left at least two people dead and six more injured. As we have said many times before, this shouldn't be happening in America, especially in our schools. Our children should be able to go to school without fearing such senseless violence. It's a promise we as adults should be able to keep."
"We send our condolences to the victims' families, friends, and community and stand with Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and Police Chief Shon Barnes as they work to comfort residents and help their city heal.
"How many children must die, how many adults must die, before our nation takes action to reduce gun violence? We must and we can do more to protect people from this senseless carnage. Mayors are doing everything they can to prevent and reduce gun violence in their cities, although local ordinances are often preempted by state legislatures - and Congress has repeatedly chosen not to act. Our children deserve better. The U.S. Conference of Mayors again calls on Congress to do its job, to pass and send to the President common sense gun safety legislation."
