ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona has announced the student marshals for fall 2024 commencement. Student marshals are chosen to represent their academic division based on outstanding academic achievement.

At Penn State Altoona, student marshals lead graduating students from their division during the commencement procession. Penn State Altoona will hold its fall 2024 commencement ceremony at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, in the Arena of the Adler Athletic Complex.

Below are testimonials from each of the four student marshals:

Abigail Lee Kubiak

Bachelor of Arts in Political Science
Student Marshal for the Division of Arts and Humanities

"I want to begin by expressing my appreciation for the Penn State community for having such a positive, lasting impact on me.

"When one goes to college, they do not know the extent of how much it'll impact them. Over the past three and a half years, I have experienced more change than in any other period of my life mentally, emotionally, and physically. I've been challenged in ways I never anticipated. Change is scary, as it's associated with a lot of unknowns. I had a difficult time transitioning to college because I was terrified of what I didn't know. I didn't expect to meet the individuals I did, to take part in undergraduate research, or even make it to this point. Now, I'm still terrified. However, I have the tools and different perspectives to take with me into a new chapter of life, to tackle the challenges that lay ahead. It's what we do not know that will allow us to see the world differently.

"As you think about your future, remember unfamiliarity allows growth. It's okay to be frightened of that unknown, in whatever shape it may take.

"Here is to the fall class of 2024. Congratulations!"

Thad Robert Leidy

Bachelor of Science in Accounting
Student Marshal for the Division of Business, Engineering, and Information Sciences and Technology

"My time at Penn State Altoona was so much more than I expected! Who would've known that a small campus located in Altoona, PA, could've provided me and many others with such a great education. The small classes were so pivotal to my success and in fact made me decide to stay at Altoona instead of transferring to University Park.

"Building relationships with my professors is something I had not considered I would do in college, but it ended up being very impactful for me. They are mentors who genuinely care about our success, taking the time to provide personalized guidance and support. Their encouragement has pushed me to explore my potential and develop a passion for accounting that I never knew I had. Also, having many classes with the same people allowed us as a class to grow and develop lasting relationships. From the professors to the faculty, to the fellow students, everyone here wants you to succeed.

"I am truly honored to be the student marshal for the division of Business, Engineering, and Information Sciences and Technology. I wish everyone the best as we wrap up our time as Penn State Altoona and begin our next chapter."

Emily Perry

Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Early Childhood Education
Student Marshal for the Division of Education, Human Development, and Social Sciences

"What an honor it is to serve as the student marshal for the Division of Education, Human Development, and Social Sciences for the fall 2024 graduation!

"My time at Penn State Altoona has been incredibly fulfilling. I have formed life-long friendships with some of the most impactful people I have ever met, and I have been able to grow both personally and professionally with the help of my wonderful professors. Throughout my college career, I have faced personal struggles that I never would have been able to overcome if it wasn't for their unconditional support.

"While I am beyond eager to continue shaping the lives of young children in my new adventures, it is undeniable that I am going to miss the people-both big and little-who have led me to this point. The gratitude I have for each and every one of you is everlasting. What an incredible chapter that is closing for all of my fellow graduates. I wish you all nothing but the best in your future endeavors!"

Nicole Lee Flanders

Bachelor of Science in Biology
Student Marshal for the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

"When I first arrived at Penn State Altoona, I was overwhelmed by the start of the next four years-the buildings, classrooms, and professors. The early weeks were stressful as I navigated the campus, often checking the map to ensure I was in the right place. But despite the anxiety, I quickly found my place, building meaningful connections with professors and friends.

"Initially, I planned to pursue medical school, but my research with Dr. Levri opened new doors. Through this experience, I discovered the power of curiosity and critical thinking. I've presented research at conferences, educated the public on invasive species, and studied sea turtle nesting. These opportunities have reshaped my goals, and I look forward to graduate school, ready to apply the skills I've gained.

"Looking back, I'm grateful for how my time at Penn State Altoona shaped me into someone I'm proud to be. I'm deeply thankful for my family, friends, and mentors who've supported me along the way. As the student marshal for the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, I feel honored and privileged to reflect on this journey. I'll carry the lessons and memories of these years with me for the rest of my life."
