O&R has officially energized its latest addition to the Lovett electric substation in Stony Point - a project that significantly enhances the company's electric transmission system to provide more reliable and resilient electric service for approximately 50,000 customers in Rockland County.
The new 345 kV (kilovolt) addition to the existing 138 kV Lovett substation, a $58 million investment, was constructed at the former O&R Lovett Generating Station property at the corner of Elm Avenue and Spring Street in Tomkins Cove. The additional substation integrates gas insulated substation (GIS) technology, which incorporates a smaller footprint and will require less maintenance.
Both substations are connected to the electric transmission system through overhead transmission lines, improving electric service reliability for the community.
"The completion of the new Lovett substation is not just an incredible accomplishment for our company, but a significant milestone in our long-term goals of providing our customers with the clean and reliable energy that they expect and deserve," said O&R President and CEO Michele O'Connell. "This major project is a testament to our commitment of helping New York State achieve its climate and renewable energy goals."
"We commend Orange & Rockland on the opening of the new, climate resilient Lovett substation, which will provide our community with clean, secure, and reliable energy," said Jim Monaghan, Stony Point town supervisor. "This substation will improve reliability of service to residents and businesses throughout Stony Point and Rockland County. Additionally, this new substation brings an important tax benefit to Stony Point, the North Rockland School District, and Rockland County."
