On October 11th, 2024, the Baumgartner House Museum in Fraser was presented with the President's Award for historical preservation, from Keeping Michigan Beautiful, Inc., an organization whose mission is "To promote, to provide education and to recognize beautification and restoration projects throughout the state of Michigan."

The Fraser Historical Commission, who runs the museum, was nominated by Fraser resident Vania Apps, and the application was completed by Historical Commissioner, Marti VanEenenaam-Iwanicki who also accepted the award at the Bavarian Inn in Frankenmuth, MI.

With a mission similar to Keeping Michigan Beautiful, Inc., the Baumgartner House Museum and its surrounding gardens aims to provide educational opportunities, protect historical significance, and preserve its authentic grounds.

Apps highlighted these goals by stating, "We think that every community needs something to be proud of, to learn from, and to enjoy."

The Baumgartner House, built in 1875 by John C. Baumgartner, is the oldest house in Fraser and will celebrate its 150th Anniversary in 2025. Located on the corner of Masonic Blvd. and Kelly Road, it is built in a unique German Rundbogenstil (round arched windows) style. The property, which was once an 80-acre homestead, now includes the museum, Depot Visitor Center, the Hemme Barn, and Samantha's Garden on about one acre.

The Fraser Historical Commission, alongside the Fraser Historical Society, as well as local master gardeners is devoted to the upkeep of the museum and grounds.

Whether it's a tour through the Baumgartner house, or a stroll through Samantha's Garden (located behind the barn), the property is sure to remind anyone that history is just as beautiful as the present, and equally exciting as the future.

The Baumgartner House Museum is located at 18577 Masonic Blvd in Fraser, MI. It is open for free tours on the first Sunday of each month (except January and July).
