A Journey of Language, Learning, and Growth

For Gwen Sears, a Speech-Language Pathology major and Spanish minor at Lebanon Valley College, studying abroad in Valencia, Spain, was more than an academic venture-it was a complete immersion into Spanish language, culture, and lifestyle. Her semester abroad provided a fresh perspective on her career goals, personal priorities, and the importance of global citizenship.

With her ambition to become a bilingual speech therapist, Gwen's time in Spain provided invaluable language experience and improved conversational abilities.

"I would not be even a fraction of the Spanish speaker I am without my study abroad experience," she said. "Now, I can hold conversations with native speakers with fluidity, and although not completely bilingual, I would say that I have learned how to hold a conversation and work my way through when I may not know how to say something."

When she wasn't hard at work in the classroom, Gwen made sure to experience the vibrant local culture. She attended "Las Fallas," a massive, weeklong festival in March.

"The streets are filled with live music, firecrackers, and huge statues made of paper mache," she explained. "The best way I can explain it would be Mardi Gras times 100."

In addition to Las Fallas, she attended Valencia's Saint's Day celebrations and even participated in the city's Chinese New Year parade, which showcased the diverse influences within Valencia's community. These events offered Gwen a deep appreciation for Spanish and Valencian traditions.

Gwen stayed with a host family in Valencia, fully immersing herself in local customs and everyday life. She adjusted to Spain's daily routines, such as late dinners, often held around 9 or 9:30 p.m., and navigating the city on foot and by public transportation. She quickly embraced the temperate weather and sunny days as reasons to explore.

"This was my first time being outside of the United States for more than one week, so it totally opened my eyes to experiencing a new culture," Gwen explained. "Living with a host family catapulted this experience; I quickly learned cultural differences within the home. Spending time outside your home country helps put global citizenship into perspective."

Beyond language and culture, Gwen's time abroad shaped her outlook on life and career. Her experience affirmed her commitment to SLP and her goal of becoming a bilingual therapist but also reminded her to balance ambition with an appreciation for life outside of work.

Gwen encourages other students to embrace the challenges and adventures of studying abroad. "Take the good days with the bad," she advised. "This was a brave choice, but I promise it was the right one." She urges students to savor every moment, whether exploring historic sites or finding new strengths within themselves.

Gwen's study abroad experience in Valencia left her with lasting memories, from mastering new language skills to celebrating life through Spanish culture. Her journey abroad will continue to influence her studies, career path, and personal life as she continues at LVC and beyond.
