Spurlock discusses political advertising with local news station

Jeff Spurlock, Department of Media

Jefferson Spurlock, professor and associate chair of integrated media in the Department of Media, recently appeared on local news station KTVB to discuss his research on political advertising and the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights.

In the interview, Spurlock explained that political advertisements count as protected speech. There are no restrictions on what candidates can say in election ads.

"Political candidates know that what they're putting in their broadcast ads might not be the truth," Spurlock told KTVB. "But do the public know that? Not necessarily."
