Inside the Core: Celebrating Catholic Intellectual Tradition

Robert White, POLS and CORE, author

Inside the Core this week we are excited about two events that celebrate the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and its inter-disciplinary focus.

The first is our Scholars' Forum in the Catholic Intellectual Series on Wednesday, November 20, at 4 p.m. featuring Robert White, who currently teaches in POLS and will be teaching in the Core, starting in the spring semester of 2025. He will be discussing his upcoming book, The Shaping of the Tradition: St Gregory the Great and the Ecumenical Councils, Catholic University Press, forthcoming in 2025. Robert White has a doctorate and licentiate from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and, among many interesting activities, has taught at the Université Catholique de l'Ouest, in Angers, France and the Pontificia Università di San Tommaso in Urbe, Rome. While he was in Rome in that capacity, he guided our Core faculty around Rome, giving wonderful historical and religious background on many sites, during our trip there in 2018. He has also been involved with other Mission oriented trips for Seton Hall faculty. His presentation promises to be very interesting. The event, like all Scholars' Forum presentations, will be held only on TEAMS. Click here for the link.

Josephine DeVito, School of Nursing and Core faculty member

The second event celebrates Women, Healthcare and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition on Thursday, November 21 at 2 p.m. in-person in the University Center Events Lounge and on TEAMS. This event is sponsored by the Catholic Studies Department, along with the University Core, Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology, SHMS and the School of Nursing. It grew out of an awareness that some of our female Core authors (such as Edith Stein and Dorothy Day) were involved with health care. Beyond these Core authors, we realized (as we discussed this topic and brought it to others, such as Ines Murzaku) there are several other important women figures central to the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and its service to others through health care that should be celebrated (Teresa of Calcutta, Mother Cabrini and, very importantly for us at Seton Hall, Elizabeth Ann Seton). Josephine DeVito, who teaches regularly and enthusiastically in the Core, is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing. Out of her vision regarding the topic of Women, Healthcare and the CIT, grew this wonderful panel, truly a collaborative event.

Panelists are Mary Ellen Roberts (Nursing) presenting on Elizabeth Ann Seton; Ines Murzaku (Catholic Studies) presenting on Teresa of Calcutta; Dianne Traflet (ICSST) presenting on Edith Stein; and Josephine DeVito (Nursing) presenting on both Dorothy Day and Mother Cabrini. We are very happy to be joining with colleagues across four schools and colleges to celebrate these amazing women and their connections to healthcare and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, expressing itself through service. Please join us either in-person in the Events Lounge, where refreshments will be served, or on TEAMS. Click <<here>> for the link.
