Schakowsky Statement Marking One Year Since October 7th Terrorist Attacks in Israel

October 7, 2024

EVANSTON - Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), released the following statement marking one year since the horrific terrorist attacks in Israel:

"One year ago today, the world saw the worst perpetration of violence inflicted on the Jewish people since the Holocaust. The terrorist organization Hamas took the lives of over 1,200 people in Israel, injured over 3,000 more, and captured over 200 people - including many American citizens.

"It has been an unbearable year since these devastating attacks. My heart aches for all those who were killed on October 7th and their loved ones who mourn their loss; for the hostages and their families who have endured an incomprehensible year of suffering, and in some cases, even death; and for the thousands of innocent Palestinian families caught in the ensuing war that have lost those dear to them, fleeing homes and communities turned to rubble, living in fear and struggling to survive.

"Just last month, the Chicago community came together following the devastating news that Hersh Goldberg-Polin, a young man with a bright future ahead of him who was taken hostage by Hamas, was killed. His parents, Jon and Rachel, are from Chicago. His grandmother and aunt are residents of the 9th Congressional District. They have endlessly stepped forward to make their voices heard, tell Hersh's story, and advocate for the safe return of every hostage.

"It is time for the Netanyahu government and Hamas leadership to reach a final deal. Right now, the Middle East is teetering on the brink of a catastrophic regional war that would put millions more in danger. The U.S. and our allies cannot allow this to happen. The human cost of this war is staggering, and it must end now.

"This evening, I will gather with community members in Skokie to mark this solemn anniversary. As we mourn, grieve, and reflect, my top priorities remain bringing the hostages home now, ending the violence once and for all, and bringing long-term peace, justice, and security to Israelis and Palestinians alike."
