A man died at the hospital 5 days after being shot in Northeast Portland.

On Friday, October 4, 2024 at 5:43 p.m., a Portland Police Officer assigned to North Precinct was enroute to an unrelated call when he was flagged down about a vehicle crash at Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Northeast Columbia Boulevard. The officer learned that the driver of one of the vehicles, Anthony Dwayne Bell, Jr, 38, of Portland, had been shot prior to the crash. EMS responded and Bell was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

The Enhanced Community Safety Team (ECST) responded to the scene to investigate the shooting. Preliminary investigation revealed that Bell was driving when a suspect or suspects in another vehicle fired shots at his vehicle, striking Bell. The suspects or suspects left the scene and no immediate arrests were made. No suspect descriptions are available for release at this time.

On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, Bell died at the hospital. His family has been notified of his death and provided the attached photographs for public release. They are asking for privacy.

The medical examiner determined that Bell died of homicide by gunshot wounds.

The investigation has been transferred to the Portland Police Homicide Unit. If anyone has information about this case, please contact Detective J.D. McGuire at [email protected] 503-823-2081 or Detective Charlie Asheim [email protected] and reference case number 24-254562.
