City Park Ranger Experience Fuels Police Career

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (October 12, 2024) - Officer Kyle Zielinski, a recent graduate of the police academy, is patrolling the streets of New Brunswick as a rookie officer. However, his journey to law enforcement began in an unexpected place: as a City park ranger.

Before joining the police force, Zielinski spent four months as a park ranger in New Brunswick. He was one of the first eight civilians hired as a park ranger when the city introduced them in spring 2023. This experience proved invaluable, giving him a deep understanding of the City and its residents. He interacted with park users, learned about community issues, and developed strong interpersonal skills - all assets in his current role.

Zielinski's transition from park ranger to police officer is a prime example of a city employee leveraging prior experience for a new public service role. Police Chief Vincent Sabo highlights the benefits of such transitions, stating that past experiences add a unique perspective that strengthens the department. In Zielinski's case, his park ranger background enhances his approach to law enforcement and community engagement.
