Help Wanted: Snowplow Drivers

The County Highway Department is looking to hire more than a dozen street maintenance workers before the snow flies.

Right now, they're 14 drivers short of their budgeted strength of 72 street maintenance workers.

Snowplow drivers hit the roads early when it snows, clearing 1,400 lane miles of roads for the morning and afternoon rush hours.

But there's more to the position that just snow removal. The job offers year-round employment doing a variety of things.

"It's a fun job. You're doing something different all the time," says Highway Superintendent Ted Dunkmann. "Every day's different. You might be paving one day and trimming back brush the next and repairing a storm sewer the next day. It's not like you're always stuck doing the same thing all the time."

The ideal person is someone with a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and some road construction experience.

"People with experience snowplowing are also good," Dunkmann says.

The starting pay with no experience and no CDL is $18.25/hour. CDL training will be provided with opportunities for advancement.

Applicants with a Class-A CDL and some construction experience could start at $22.68/hour, Dunkmann says.
