Investigation underway after multiple break and enters- Tweed/Byron PD

Police have commenced an investigation into a number of break and enters in the states north that involved a pursuit with a stolen vehicle.

About 4.50am today (Tuesday 26 November 2024), officers from Tweed/Byron Police District responded to a report of a break and enter at a home on Fingal Street, Brunswick Heads.

Officers were informed that an occupant of the home was woken by three males who allegedly obtained the keys to a silver Honda CR-V that was parked on the street which was driven from the location.

A short time later the occupants of a home on Balun Lane disturbed a male climbing through a bathroom window. The male was seen to enter the Honda with two other men.

The owners have followed the Honda in their own vehicle and contacted Triple Zero.

At the time the Honda was travelling with a green Volkswagen Passat.

Officers later located the Honda driving west along Tweed Road. When the vehicle failed to stop as directed a pursuit was initiated where speeds of 140kph were reached.

As the pursuit entered Jacaranda Avenue, Byron Bay, the vehicle crashed into the garage of a home along Jacaranda Drive, Byron Bay.

Following the crash three occupants ran from the scene.

Officers - with the assistance of the Dog Squad - commenced a patrol of the area.

About 7am police responded to a home invasion on Julian Rocks Drive, Byron Bay, where a grey Hyundai Getz had been stolen.

The Volkswagen - where inquiries established had been stolen from Hayes Street, Goonellabah, earlier this morning - was located unattended by police along Cains Road, Byron Bay.

All incidents are believed to be linked and officers established multiple crime scenes. The located vehicles have been seized for forensic examination.

The home on Jacaranda Drive sustained extensive damage.

There were no reports of any person being injured.
