LACOE 2023-2024 Annual Report Highlights

The Los Angeles County Office of Education has released its Annual Report for the 2023-24 school year, spotlighting significant achievements and future initiatives. The report reflects LACOE's dedication to serving nearly two million students throughout the county, with a strong focus on improving student outcomes, fostering community partnerships and advancing educational excellence.

Some of the Major 2023-24 Achievements Highlighted in the Report

  • 1. Expansion of Community Schools and Regional Support
    LACOE expanded support to over 465 community schools, making it the largest network of its kind in the nation. Additionally, LACOE was selected as the Greater Los Angeles Regional Transformational Assistance Center, one of only eight in the state, to help local schools implement the California Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP).
  • 2. Support for Inglewood Unified School District
    Significant progress was made in guiding Inglewood USD towards exiting receivership. The district has improved in areas such as Community Relations, Personnel Management, and Pupil Achievement. It is on track to meet exit criteria in financial and facilities management.
  • 3. Universal Prekindergarten Career Development Initiative (UPK-CDI)
    Launched in 2022, the UPK-CDI helped 125 educators complete career pathways and enrolled 141 more. This program has integrated federal, state, and philanthropic funding, enabling over 60 Head Start parents to join classrooms as assistant teachers.
  • 4. Leadership in Artificial Intelligence (AI)
    LACOE became a pioneer in AI education, establishing guidelines for school districts, forming an AI Taskforce, and hosting a series of workshops and events. Over 700 attendees participated in LACOE's AI Symposium and Cyber Tech Talk.
  • 5. Student Behavioral Health Initiatives
    Through the Student Behavioral Health Incentive Program (SBHIP), LACOE expanded access to virtual mental health services, covering over 80% of students in the county. Additionally, 160 new wellspaces were created, enhancing student access to mental health support.

LACOE outlined several key focus areas for the coming years including:

  • 1. Strategic Planning for Inglewood USD
    LACOE is collaborating on a strategic consolidation plan to enhance resources and educational programs. This plan includes new facilities, such as the Iovine and Young Center, and partnerships with the City of Inglewood for community hubs.
  • 2. Equity Initiatives
    LACOE has been named a new equity lead for the State of California. The office will work with local education agencies (LEAs) to identify barriers and opportunities, aiming to close racial disparities in educational outcomes.
  • 3. Empowering Student Voices
    The Superintendent's Student Advisory Council will host the first Student Empowerment Summit, focusing on youth advocacy and shared solutions for common challenges faced by students across the county.
  • 4. Juvenile Justice Education Reimagined
    LACOE plans to establish a dedicated division focused on rehabilitative and nurturing environments for students in the juvenile justice system, building on the "L.A. Model" and recommendations from the Children's Defense Fund.
