Washington, D.C. -- American Constitution Society President Russ Feingold released the following statement regarding the tallying of the 2024 presidential election results:
"Free and fair elections, and the orderly and peaceful determination and implementation of results are fundamental to our democracy's survival. We must ensure that all ballots are counted in accordance with a lawful, accountable, and transparent process. Any election disputes must be resolved in a fair, open and orderly way in accordance with the law.
As we saw four years ago and continue to see today, there are those who would discredit and undermine this process in their quest to obtain power, imperiling our democracy and the rule of law.
We must speak out against any and all attacks on the election process and the rule of law in the days and weeks ahead. We must exercise patience, civility, and restraint, so that the results of the elections can be determined in accordance with the rule of law and peacefully accepted by the American people.
What happened on January 6, 2021, was a violent insurrection fueled by misinformation about a free and fair election and rhetoric designed to fan the flames of political violence. We came close to losing our democracy that day. We cannot allow that to happen again. Protecting our democracy will allow us, no matter the election outcome, to continue to work together to fight to advance equity and justice, uphold the rule of law, and guard against the abuse of power."
