Mayor Scott Recently Co-Hosted a Mayors Against Illegal Guns Summit on Gun Violence Prevention and Gun Industry Accountability Following Release of New Report Exposing Top Crime Gun Manufacturers
Everytown Supporters, Alongside Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action Volunteers, Made More Than 12 Million Voter Contacts To Support Gun Sense Candidates Nationwide
BALTIMORE - Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, declared a major victory today as Baltimore voters re-elected gun sense champion Mayor Brandon M. Scott. A member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns since 2020 and a Co-Chair since 2022, Mayor Scott's comprehensive approach to gun violence prevention includes deep investment in community-based violence intervention coupled with a strategic focus on stemming the flow of illegal guns into his city.
"As a born-and-bred Baltimorean who has worked on gun safety for decades, I couldn't be prouder of my home city for giving Mayor Scott four more years to build on his lifesaving legacy," said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. "Under the leadership of Mayor Scott, Baltimore has seen gun violence rates drop, and Everytown will keep working with him to keep all of the city's neighborhoods safe."
"Mayor Scott has dedicated his career to making Baltimore a safer place, working tirelessly to end gun violence and restore the public's trust in government," said Angela Ferrell-Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action. "We look forward to furthering our work together, and are committed to supporting the solutions he has implemented to address the gun violence crisis in Baltimore and throughout the state."
"Mayor Scott has proven his devotion to our fight to end gun violence through his proactive, collaborative and community-based initiatives focused on keeping Marylanders safe from harm," said Cindy Camp, a volunteer with the Maryland chapter of Moms Demand Action. "Leaders like Mayor Scott know they are on the frontlines of our nation's gun violence epidemic, and that every elected official needs to work in tandem to tackle this crisis. He has consistently prioritized public safety and productive collaboration over ambition, and I am so proud to call him my Mayor for another term."
In September, Mayor Scott co-hosted a Mayors Against Illegal Guns summit in Baltimore, where leading representatives from close to 20 cities discussed initiatives to hold the gun industry accountable. The meeting followed the release of a report exposing the top crime gun manufacturers across thirty-four U.S. cities. According to the new data, just four gun manufacturers accounted for over 40 percent of the recovered crime guns in 2023 - Glock, Taurus, Smith & Wesson, and Ruger. This concentration of crime gun recoveries is particularly notable given there are currently over 11,000 licensed gun manufacturers in the United States.
In 2006, then-New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and then-Boston Mayor Thomas Menino founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns as a coalition of 15 mayors. The coalition has since grown to a nonpartisan group of more than 2,000 current and former mayors from the smallest towns to the biggest cities in nearly every state.
