Why Community Pathologists Attend the Park City Anatomic Pathology Update Year After Year

ARUP Laboratories is thrilled to host another session of the Park City Anatomic Pathology (PCAP) Update with the University of Utah Department of Pathology, February 9-13, 2025. This year's conference will focus on gastrointestinal (GI), pancreatic, and hepatobiliary pathology.

The course is designed to be relevant to community pathologists, presenting practical topics and updates that regularly appear in community practices.

We are honored to host esteemed keynote speakers Dr. Andrew Bellizzi, clinical professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Iowa, and Dr. Elizabeth Montgomery, professor of pathology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Dr. Bellizzi's research interests include the diagnosis, classification, and etiopathogenesis of human disease, with an emphasis on GI, pancreatic, neuroendocrine, and hereditary tumors.

Bellizzi will give three presentations during the conference:

• Differentiating the Undifferentiated: An Immunohistochemical Approach
• Neuroendocrine Neoplasms of the GI Tract: Diagnosis, Reporting, and Clinical Correlates
• A GI Pathologist's Perspective on Hematolymphoid Neoplasms of the GI Tract

Dr. Montgomery has published numerous articles and books on GI and soft tissue pathology and has trained numerous fellows in these disciplines.

Montgomery will give three presentations during the conference:

• Mesenchymal Neoplasms of the Gastrointestinal Tract and Liver-It's All About Location
• Fun With Gastrointestinal Tract Polyps and Polyposes
• Gastrointestinal Tract Dysplasia-Timely Topics From Top to Bottom

New this year are joint presentations with expertise from two different experts either back-to-back or presenting alongside each other. One example is a hepatology clinician from the University of Utah School of Medicine talking alongside an anatomic pathologist to give a clinical perspective on steatotic liver disease. Attendees will also stay ahead of the curve with updates on the latest terminology and guidelines. One key topic will be the new terminology for fatty liver disease, now referred to as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Updates in the diagnosis of MASLD will also be covered. Understanding these changes is crucial for accurate diagnosis and patient communication.

"This conference is for community pathologists. We want to ensure it is informative, engaging, and enjoyable for attendees, and we hope they return year after year," says Kimberley Evason, MD, PhD, a medical director at ARUP, associate professor at the University of Utah, and an investigator in the Department of Oncological Sciences at the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Dr. Evason's research and clinical interests are centered on GI and liver pathology with a specific focus on hepatocellular carcinoma, and she is one of two course directors for this year's PCAP. Evason is joined by Gillian Hale, MD, MPH, a medical director of anatomic pathology at ARUP and an associate professor (clinical) at the University of Utah. Hale's research interests include infections of the liver and GI tract.

Additional presenters include faculty from the University of Utah and ARUP Laboratories with expertise not only in GI pathology, but also in cytology, hematopathology, molecular pathology, and hepatology.

Evason has presented at the Park City Anatomic Pathology Update in years past and noted, "I'm looking forward to seeing some familiar faces from previous years and also meeting new attendees.
