Tom Barrett’s Anti Abortion Record on Display In MI 07

Tom Barrett's anti-abortion voting record is on full display in Michigan's 7th Congressional District, as a new ad highlights the dangers his agenda presents to women and families in Michigan.

Barrett has a lengthy history of anti-abortion extremism, including a bill he introduced "which creates penalties for individuals" and includes "up to two years imprisonment and a fine of up to $50,000." He also supported "a failed attempt to reinstate Michigan's 1931 abortion ban."

Despite Michiganders' support for reproductive rights, Barrett has "downplayed the possibility" that his extreme record "would remain an issue in his race - saying it won't matter because "my opponent is not a woman."

DCCC Spokesperson Aidan Johnson:
"Tom Barrett isn't just lying to voters about his anti-choice agenda - he's lying to himself if he thinks it won't make a difference in this race. Michiganders have already protected their access to reproductive rights, and they're not going to elect an anti-abortion extremist like Barrett who will strip them of their freedoms with a national abortion ban."

Michigan Advance: Mid-Michigan woman shares her story of life-saving abortion in Hertel congressional campaign ad
Kyle Davidson | September 19, 2024

  • In an ad released Thursday in support of former state Sen. Curtis Hertel's (D-East Lansing) congressional campaign, [Stephanie] Jones describes losing blood and losing consciousness, as her pregnancy caused her uterus to rupture.

  • Hertel has repeatedly attacked Barrett on abortion with the ad accusing Barrett of supporting a national abortion ban, pointing to a bill Barrett introduced while serving in the state Senate in 2019 which creates penalties for individuals […] including up to two years imprisonment and a fine of up to $50,000.

  • Barrett also joined Republicans in the Legislature in supporting a failed attempt to reinstate Michigan's 1931 abortion ban. Michigan voters in 2022 passed a constitutional amendment, Proposal 3, guaranteeing abortion rights.

  • Barrett downplayed the possibility that abortion would remain an intense issue in the 2024 election cycle.

  • "My opponent is not a woman. He does not have the depth of resources that Slotkin had. The top of the ticket should be far more competitive. The abortion proposal, which dominated the race and every race in America seemingly two years ago, is not on the ballot in Michigan this year," Barrett told the Examiner in reflecting on his 2022 loss.
