AARP Foundation Expands Relief Fund to Support Victims of Hurricanes Helene and Milton

WASHINGTON-In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene and the emerging threat of Hurricane Milton, AARP Foundation is working closely with local organizations on the ground to deliver critical aid to those in need, particularly older adults, including essential resources like food, shelter and home repair, legal aid services and more.

To further support these efforts, AARP Foundation has expanded its urgent disaster relief campaign. Initially, AARP pledged to match donations dollar for dollar-up to $100,000-to amplify the impact of contributions aimed at helping survivors rebuild their homes, communities, and lives. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of donors, the initial match was met within a day. Recognizing the ongoing need and inspired by the public's response, AARP is now committing an additional $300,000 in matching funds, raising the total match to $400,000 to support continued relief efforts as communities work toward recovery from both hurricanes.

"Millions of people across the Southeast-particularly vulnerable older adults-will face immense challenges as they rebuild from the devastating impact of Hurricanes Helene and Milton," said Claire Casey, President of AARP Foundation. "Every dollar will go to local organizations to meet the urgent needs of those impacted by the storms and lay the groundwork for a strong recovery."

In late September, Hurricane Helene carved a 500-mile path of destruction across the Southeast, claiming over 200 lives and becoming the deadliest U.S. hurricane since Katrina. Hundreds remain missing, more than 275,000 homes and businesses are still without power, and entire communities are in ruins. Less than two weeks later, Hurricane Milton struck the Florida Gulf Coast, bringing more storm surges, flooding, wind damage and widespread hardship.

AARP Foundation will direct 100% of all funds raised to organizations on the ground that will be there not just today, but in three months or six months, to support those affected by the storms and rebuild their communities.
