Patterson Family Foundation Gift

Topeka, Kan. - Washburn University announced today the Patterson Family Foundation, based in Kansas City, Missouri, has granted $1 million to the School of Law to expand the Washburn University School of Law Rural Legal Practice Network and Externship Program.

"Washburn Law is committed to ensuring high quality legal representation in rural
communities," said JuliAnn Mazachek, president, Washburn University. "We are extremely
grateful to the Patterson Family Foundation for supporting this initiative that not only helps rural counties thrive but provides expanded opportunities for Washburn Law students who are eager to serve them."

The Patterson Family Foundation is a family-led foundation that extends the legacy of Neal and Jeanne Patterson. The Foundation's mission, "Working together to help rural communities thrive," is carried forward through strategic grantmaking and other collaborative initiatives that serve rural counties across Kansas and western Missouri.

The Foundation's investment has allowed for the development of this program, which will create a comprehensive network of rural practitioners that provides access to legal resources and the opportunity to connect, learn and mentor. Immersive legal externships will allow law students to live, work and lead in rural Kansas communities, under the supervision of a local attorney, and experience the rich professional and personal aspects of life within a rural community.

"Externship opportunities in rural areas will provide our students with the experience they need to develop their skills and prepare them for rural practice," said Jeffrey Jackson, dean, Washburn Law. "The shrinking number of attorneys in rural communities jeopardizes many Kansans' ability to obtain legal representation. This program allows us to proactively address that."

Rural law has been an area of focus for Washburn's School of Law, which offers scholarships and grants to students potentially interested in that area of practice. The School of Law also prioritizes building relationships with individuals, institutions and organizations across the state to ensure high quality placements for its students.

"The Patterson Family Foundation, alongside other collaborators, is making an exceptional impact on the rural communities where many Washburn students grow up. We are thankful to the Foundation for this investment in Washburn's program and look forward to continuing to work with them to make a difference in these important communities," said Marshall Meek, president, Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation.
