PALATINE - State Senator Cristina Castro recently celebrated Harper College as they officially broke ground on the new Canning Student Center, which will provide a wide array of essential services for students.
"Harper College is an integral institution on the pathway to success for undergraduate and continuing education students in this region of Illinois. I have long been advocating for the construction of a student center here, and I'm truly thankful that we've reached this important date," said Castro (D - Elgin). "Investments like this not only enhance the educational environment, but also serve as an important recruitment tool to grow the student body."
The Canning Student Center will offer a variety of student services such as admissions outreach, academic advising, access and disability services, job placement resources and more. It will also offer the chance for students to socialize, engage and connect with their peers.
Additionally, the space will house specific academic classes including hospitality management, kitchens, a mock hotel, and restaurant environments.
Harper College is a public community college, and with the new Canning Student Center, employees will be able to display options for students to pursue an affordable pathway to a university.
The project was financed by $46.4 million in state funding through Castro-backed Rebuild Illinois and $55.3 million in institutional funds.
The Canning Student Center is scheduled for completion in summer 2027. It serves as another example of Illinois' dedication to education.
