Unified Government Celebrates Opening of Environmental Services Campus

Today, local officials with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, gathered for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to celebrate the opening of the new 62,000-square-foot Environmental Services Campus and the official rebranding of Public Works' Water Pollution Control Division to Environmental Services.

The new Environmental Services Campus centralizes operations to enhance efficiency, improve response times, and better serve the community. Designed with innovation and sustainability in mind, the $21.2 million facility was completed on time and under budget.

"This new state of the art and innovation campus represents the future of how we serve our community, with a focus on efficiency and sustainability," said Mayor/CEO Tyrone A. Garner. "It reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and to providing excellent services for Kansas City, Kansas residents."

In addition to its operational improvements, the rebranding of Water Pollution Control to Environmental Services reflects a modernized identity that better aligns with industry standards. The new name emphasizes leadership, innovation, and the division's role in safeguarding public health and local waterways.

"This facility is an example of our dedication to building a stronger, healthier community," said District 8 Commissioner Andrew Davis. "It positions us to serve current and future generations with professionalism and care. Investing in infrastructure is economic development."

Environmental Services serves more than 46,000 customers across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. The division's rebranding is expected to increase recognition of its role, improve access to environmental grants, and deepen community engagement.

"The rebranding is about more than a name change-it's a renewed commitment to public health and environmental stewardship," said Jeff Miles, Environmental Services Director. "We want our customers to recognize that we're not just about wastewater treatment. We're here to safeguard their health, protect local waterways, and educate the community about these critical services."

The division plans to host outreach events and open houses over the next 12 months to ensure customers understand its services and the importance of wastewater management. The new Environmental Services Campus represents progress, innovation, and a deep commitment to the community's health and well-being. It equips the division to meet today's challenges and ensures sustainable operations for years to come.
