Don’t Miss Diverse Panel Discussions And Interactive Workshops At The 2024 Las Vegas Book Festival Saturday, Oct. 19

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 8, 2024) - The Las Vegas Book Festival, now in its 23rd year, will feature diverse panel discussions and interactive workshops Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The free annual event is held in downtown Las Vegas at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St., and is open to all ages. View the full schedule.

Authors will discuss everything from folktales to politics throughout the day. Panel discussion topics include:

  • "Brave Journeys" with middle-grade authors John Schu, Mae Respicio, Yamile Saied Méndez and moderator Jen Nails;
  • "The Magic of Folktales & Fantasy" with headliner Tracy Wolff, Axie Oh, Katy Rose Pool, Akshaya Raman, Tara Sim, Tricia Levenseller and moderator Katie Keridan;
  • "The Human Condition in the Age of Information Overload" with Nora Lange, Justin Taylor and moderator Andrew Kiraly; and
  • "Young, Gifted and Black: The Need for Diverse Publishing" with D.K. Grey, Monarch the Poet, Randii Ianeke and moderator Elle Hope, who published poetry by more than 50 Black artists.

Three Las Vegas-centric panels also will take place at the festival:

  • "The Tortured History of Books about Las Vegas" will explore the range of books written about the city over the past century, highlighting the best, worst and weirdest literary contributions to Las Vegas. Moderated by Geoff Schumacher, the panel features local experts including Scott Dickensheets, Su Kim Chung, Michael Green and Mark Hall-Patton.
  • With the election approaching, Nevada journalists Jessica Hill, Tabitha Mueller and April Corbin Girnus will discuss the current state of politics with Steve Sebelius.
  • Las Vegas-based writers Krista Diamond, Dayvid Figler and Veronica Klash will discuss "Leaving Las Vegas Clichés Behind."

Attendees are encouraged to participate in one or all of four workshops. Materials will be provided at no cost to participants. The topics are:

  • "It's a Paper World: A Book Arts Workshop" - Discover the unique art form of book building and create a circle book with Mary Homan.
  • "Tonalli Workshop: Indigenous Calendar and Astrology System" - A tri-lingual workshop on Tonalli, a key element in indigenous timekeeping and astrology systems.
  • "Mapping Your First Book from Start to Finish" - Jarret Keene, author of "Hammer of the Dogs," will walk you through the most critical steps of the writing process.
  • "The Gift of Story: Exploring the Affective Side of the Reading" - This professional development session with John Schu studies the five affective elements of story.
