California Department of Education Releases the 2024 California School Dashboard

The statewide graduation rate has risen while chronic absenteeism has dropped.

The 2024 California School Dashboard, released today, reveals encouraging signs of progress. The color-coded dashboard is the state's main academic accountability and improvement tool and tracks the annual progress of K-12 students in several different categories.

Key Trends

The statewide graduation rate has risen from 86.2% in 2022-2023 to 86.4% in 2023-2024, remaining at a yellow performance level but still higher than pre-pandemic levels. Upon graduating, students are earning distinctions such as the State Seal of Biliteracy at higher rates than ever. The data shows more students are staying in school, with chronic absenteeism down to 20.4% statewide. TK-8 students have an even lower rate of 18.6%. Additionally, the number of districts and charter schools requiring Differentiated Assistance support have also decreased.

"These latest numbers tell an encouraging story of recovery and resilience in our schools," said Dr. Debra Duardo, Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools. "We're not yet back to pre-pandemic levels, but the trend lines are moving in the right direction. This progress reflects the tremendous work of our educators, families and students themselves who have remained committed to educational success despite recent challenges."

In L.A. County, 45 school districts were eligible for Differentiated Assistance in 2023. Eleven of those school districts have improved results in 2024 and are no longer eligible but will continue to receive Differentiated Assistance support this year. In 2023, 63 charter schools in L.A. County were eligible for Differentiated Assistance, that number dropped to 39 this year.

Composed of specialized staff from across Educational Services and Wellbeing & Support Services Divisions, we provide targeted professional development, coaching, and technical assistance to our Local Educational Agencies (LEAs). Since 2021, we have specifically focused on promoting student engagement and positive attendance.

New This Year

The California Department of Education has expanded accountability measures by introducing the Long-Term English Learner (LTEL) student group as the 14th tracked demographic. A science performance indicator has also been added, providing more comprehensive insights into student learning across disciplines.
