Today, Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) released the following statement:
"Since becoming the top Democrat on the House Committee on Natural Resources, Rep. Raúl Grijalva has been a tireless advocate for progressive causes like environmental justice, Indigenous rights, climate action, and accountability for corporate polluters. Under his leadership, the committee has also been incredibly effective, passing 149 bills during the 117th Congress, including the Great American Outdoors Act and the Environmental Justice for All Act.
"He has also been an incredible ally when it comes to Puerto Rican issues. His efforts were vital to passing the historic Puerto Rico Status Act and delivering unprecedented investments in renewable energy on the island. More broadly, he has consistently elevated the interests of Latinos and other populations on the frontlines of the climate crisis during his time leading the committee.
"During the first Trump administration, Ranking Member Grijalva was key to holding the executive branch accountable for their terrible environmental policies. I am confident that he is ready to do the same next congress.
"For all these reasons, I believe that Ranking Member Grijalva is the best candidate to lead committee Democrats during the 119th congress. I'm proud to serve alongside Raul as one of only two Latino ranking members in the house and I look forward to supporting his candidacy.
