LA City Council To Consider Mayor Bass' Appointment Of Jim McDonnell As Next LAPD Chief
Eight months after Michel Moore retired as Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, the City Council Friday will consider approving former L.ACounty Sheriff Jim McDonnell as his successor to lead the third-largest law- enforcement agency in the nation. Mayor Karen Bass nominated McDonnell in October to be the LAPD's 59th chief, following a nationwide search. He was among three finalists for the job, along with LAPD Deputy Chief Emada Tingirides and former Assistant Chief Robert Arcos, who has been working with District Attorney George Gascón's office as head of investigations. Interim Police Chief Dominic Choi, who has been leading the LAPD since March, is expected to step down and become one of three assistant chiefs under the anticipated new head. McDonnell would be taking over a department that will deal with major security issues in the coming years as the region hosts the Olympics, a Super Bowl and eight World Cup matches. On Oct. 29, the City Council's Public Safety Committee voted 4-1 to advance McDonnell's nomination. On committee member, Councilman Hugo Soto- Martinez, opposed his nomination, citing concerns some residents have made over McDonnell's past policies on immigration. Committee members questioned McDonnell on various subjects and issues - - from recruitment woes, boosting morale, unarmed response initiatives and improving relationships with the city's residents.

Nurse Pleads Not Guilty In Car Crash Killing 6
A nurse pleaded not guilty Thursday to murder and vehicular manslaughter charges stemming from a high-speed, fiery crash at a Windsor Hills intersection that killed six people, including an unborn baby, in the Windsor Hills area just over two years ago. Nicole Lorraine Linton, now 39, remains jailed without bail in connection with the Aug. 4, 2022, crash at the intersection of La Brea and Slauson avenues. She was ordered to stand trial Aug. 2 on six counts of murder and five counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence following a hearing that included about 10 days of testimony and two days of arguments from attorneys. Much of that hearing focused on Linton's history of odd conduct in the years leading up to the crash, including Internet searches that the judge noted were "filled with questions about suicide" and searches involving "Can you see your death coming?" and "Why do I feel death is near?" three days before the collision. Investigators determined that Linton's black Mercedes-Benz was traveling at 130 mph at the time of the crash, which occurred after the vehicle went through a red light. The collision and its fiery aftermath were caught on surveillance videotape from a nearby business.

Man Arrested In Fatal Shooting Of Chicago Police Officer During Traffic Stop
A 23-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a Chicago police officer during a traffic stop on the city's Southside. The man is scheduled to appear Thursday in court and also faces a separate first-degree murder charge, attempted murder of a police officer, residential burglary and weapons violations, Police Superintendent Larry Snelling told reporters Wednesday. Officer Enrique Martinez was shot about 8 p.m. Monday after he and other officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that was blocking traffic. As Martinez and his partner were speaking with the driver, a man in the front passenger seat was seen reaching for a bag on the floor, Chief of Detectives Antoinette Ursitti said. The officers ordered him to stop, but the man pulled a handgun - equipped with a machine gun-conversion device and an extended magazine - and fired at Martinez, striking the officer and the driver, Ursitti said. The man then pushed the driver from the vehicle and drove off, dragging another officer a short distance. After crashing into a parked car, he ran into an apartment, grabbed a knife and cut off a court-ordered electronic monitor. A woman inside the apartment was not harmed. He was caught a short time later after running from the apartment. Martinez was pronounced dead at a hospital. The driver of the vehicle also died.

Frenchman Fire Burns 50 Acres In Angeles National Forest, Firefighters Stop Forward Progress
Firefighters stopped forward progress of the Frenchman Fire after it burned 50 acres in the Angeles National Forest Thursday afternoon, authorities said. The brush fire started near the 39000 block of Golden State Highway at 12:08 p.m., according to Angeles National Forest. In an update just after 2:30 p.m., forest officials said firefighters had gotten the blaze 10% contained and stopped its forward progess. Earlier, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said the fire had reached 75 acres before forest officials released the updated figure. No structures were threatened and no injuries reported, authorities said. Forecasters have issued a "particularly dangerous situation" Red Flag warning for the area, a rare weather advisory typically issued once every few years which carries a higher risk level than regular Reg Flag warnings. Extremely low humidity and powerful Santa Ana winds have combined to create the potential for wildfires that can easily spark and spread rapidly, forecasters say.

LAFD, OCFS Join Fight Against Massive Mountain Fire In Ventura County
Crews from Los Angeles and Orange counties and across the state were among the hundreds of firefighters working Thursday to battle a massive wildfire in Ventura County that has forced thousands of people from their homes, left an unknown number of people injured and destroyed "numerous" structures amid fierce Santa Ana winds. The Mountain Fire was reported Wednesday morning on South Mountain near the 7900 block of Balcom Canyon and Bradley roads in the Somis area, according to the Ventura County Fire Department. The blaze quickly exploded in size, fueled by the terrain and driven by gusting Santa Ana winds. The flames eventually jumped the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway in the Camarillo Heights area and chewed their way to the west, north and south. As of Thursday morning, the Ventura County Fire Department estimated the fire had burned 14,500 acres and was 0% contained, with at least 800 firefighters were on the scene. By midday Thursday, Cal Fire put the size of the blaze at 19,643 acres.
