Our largest contestable science fund, the Endeavour Fund, invests in research with the potential to positively transform New Zealand's economy, environment, and society.
Every 3 years, the Investment Plan is updated, providing guidance to the Science Board when awarding funding. The plan for the 3 rounds from 2025 - 2027 is now available, along with the Gazette notice for the 2025 round.
Over the next 3 Endeavour funding rounds, the Science Board will fund proposals that support excellent science in a wide range of impact areas and will look for opportunities that:
The updated investment plan clarifies the role of Vision MÄtauranga; which is valuable for research where relevant however is not a required element for every project. It also removes the Research Programmes Impact categories (Protect and Add Value, and Transform).
The Investment plan should be read in conjunction with the Gazette Notice and Call for Proposals for each round. The Gazette Notice for the 2025 Endeavour Fund Investment Round, outlines available funding as well as eligibility and assessment criteria. The notice also outlines how we are streamlining the application process for Smart Ideas - moving from a 2-stage to a 1-stage process and piloting a cap on the number of proposals each organisation can submit. This will reduce the cost and time it takes to assess proposals.
By introducing a 1-stage process, funding decisions for the next round of Smart Ideas will be able to be announced earlier, providing additional time for applicants to prepare and complete contracting for successful proposals.
More information about the changes will be published on the Endeavour Fund page of our website.
