Joint Statement from Mayor Bruce Harrell and Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth

Today, Mayor Bruce Harrell and Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth issued the following statement after a shooting outside Nova High School in Seattle:

"Today's shooting outside Nova High School is yet another reminder of the senseless gun violence that is too common in our city. While we are fortunate that no one was hurt, these acts of violence are unacceptable, and our hearts go out to the students, teachers, and staff who experienced this and to all families and neighbors impacted.

"The mayor's proposed budget includes an expansion of recently approved safety technologies to the areas surrounding Nova, Garfield, and the Central District. If this expansion is approved by the Council, these technology investments - CCTV and Real Time Crime Center integration - will help us better respond to gun violence events like this, collect evidence, and ultimately prevent shootings and other crimes to keep kids and neighbors safe.

"Every person in the Central District, in District 3, and in every neighborhood across Seattle deserves to be safe and to feel safe, and we remain committed to making the right investments and enacting the right policies to support this mission and end the scourge of gun violence."

Dr. Brent Jones, Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools, issued the following statement:

"Seattle Public Schools appreciates the efforts of Mayor Harrell and the City of Seattle to support the safety of our students, staff, and those who live and work around our schools. Mayor Harrell's proposal to expand safety technologies like CCTV cameras around Nova and Garfield is an investment in the safety of our students by helping to deter criminal behavior and hold offenders accountable."
