In the recent interview with Tom Edman, President and CEO of TTM Technologies ("TTM"), Tom talked about the company's expansion plans, particularly the newly opened high-tech printed circuit board facility in Malaysia and a facility under construction in Syracuse, New York.
TTM Malaysia Facility: - A New Era for High-Tech Manufacturing
TTM's new state-of-the-art facility in Penang, Malaysia spans over 800,000 square feet and features a single-level production floor designed to maximize automation. Described as a cutting-edge operation equipped with automated guided vehicles ("AGV"s) that transport panels between various process steps, significantly reducing manual handling errors. The integration of manufacturing execution system ("MES") software allows for precise control over the movement of materials, enhancing efficiency and minimizing waste. This site isn't just a new era for TTM but also positions the company as a leader in innovative and sustainable manufacturing practices.
The Grand Opening - A Showcase of Innovation
The grand opening of the Malaysian facility marked a significant milestone for TTM. It showcased a modern production process that includes automated drilling and chemistry management systems. Critical customers, global suppliers, and government stakeholders were invited to tour the facility, to see first-hand a demonstration of advanced manufacturing capabilities that set TTM apart. This event underscored TTM's commitment to innovation and excellence in the production of high-layer-count boards, which are essential for data centers and industrial instrumentation.
Meeting the challenges Head-On
One of the challenges facing the new facility is finding a qualified workforce in Penang. In order to be at full capacity, between 800 and 1,000 individuals will need to be employed, with many positions filled by indirect labor due to automation. To bolster its workforce, TTM has proactively hired seasoned engineers and trained new graduates in China before the facility's launch. Many of the experienced engineers are Chinese Malaysians who work in China, are attracted by the high-technology levels offered in Malaysia, and are eager to return home.
TTM is maintaining workforce stability while expanding the team of operators. Nearly half of these operators hail from countries outside Malaysia, including Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Myanmar. To facilitate practical training for the immigrant workforce, TTM ensures the availability of appropriate language translation and visual aids to help them comprehend the essential steps of the process.
Partnering with the Community
The local government in Penang has been a supportive partner, emphasizing vocational training and collaborating with local universities to enhance STEM education. This commitment to developing a skilled workforce is crucial as TTM continues ramping up production.
The construction timeline for the Malaysian facility was notably efficient, with a total build time of 18 months. The innovative design features a steel frame structure, which, while more costly, contributed to creating a first-class facility. As equipment installation progressed seamlessly, TTM focused on producing samples and undergoing customer audits.
Sustainable Construction
Sustainability has also been a key consideration in TTM's planning. The Malaysian facility boasts the largest solar panel roof installations in Penang, significantly contributing to its energy needs. The facility employs advanced waste treatment processes, ensuring compliance with local environmental regulations and reflecting TTM's commitment to exceeding industry standards.
Looking Ahead to Syracuse, New York Facility
The new facility in Syracuse, New York, will be modeled after the Malaysian site. Although unique process steps will be tailored to the U.S. market, the core operational features will closely resemble those in Penang. Insights gained from the Malaysian facility's construction and operational processes will be invaluable in ensuring a smooth startup in Syracuse.
Overall, TTM Technologies is expanding its global footprint and is committed to leveraging automation, sustainability, and a skilled workforce to drive its future success in the high-tech manufacturing sector.
