Carville Park Senior Apartments to be Renovated with Union Labor

A renovation project for a Section 8 senior affordable housing complex began on Tuesday with a groundbreaking ceremony. Adrianne Todman, acting secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, joined local union officials to launch the rehabilitation of Carville Park Apartments.

The apartments are Section 8 housing and received a $7 million loan through the Nevada Infrastructure Bank in May.

The renovation, the first major update since the property was built in 1978, will provide fully renovated, union-built affordable housing for seniors. The complex is owned and operated by the Northern Nevada Building and Construction Trades Development Corporation.

Rob Benner, executive secretary-treasurer of the development corporation, said using all-union labor for the project is a testament to the commitment of Nevada's building trades unions.

"It represents our unwavering commitment to providing high-quality, affordable housing for seniors in Northern Nevada, while creating great-quality union jobs for local construction workers," he said.

The renovation is estimated to create 132 union construction jobs and 426 jobs across various industries, with an economic impact of up to $79.9 million.
