Brewing up Chemistry

Chemistry operates on many levels to help make the things we know and love possible, and beer is certainly on that list. From growing the ingredients, to the brewing process, and delivering beer to your tap- chemistry is vital to every step along the way.

That's exactly what policymakers learned when they attended the Chemistry of Beer, the latest event hosted for the Congressional Chemistry Caucus.

Caucus Senate Co-Chairs Senator Coons and Peters were on hand to welcome attendees to the event. During his remarks Coons pointed out that chemistry is at the "center of all things good in life and also the best, like beer." He took the opportunity to remind folks that National Chemistry Week is just around the corner -which, like the Chemistry Caucus, was created to better educate people about the crucial role of chemistry in everyday life.

During the program Al Horvath, CEO of the American Chemical Society (ACS) called on Simon Herriot, President of Health and Biosciences at International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF) to discuss how chemistry make beers possible, and in many cases, better.

When it comes to enhancing clarity and taste, Herriot explained the enzymes are key to the brewing process - and to improving shelf life. He also pointed out that Congress can help advance biochemistry and science by providing a responsive regulatory environment.

The event was hosted by the American Chemical Society, in coordination with other members of the Congressional Chemistry Caucus, including the American Chemistry Council, Alliance for Chemical Distribution, and the American Cleaning Institute. Special thanks to the Brewers Association for their support of the reception.

The Chemistry of Beer was the third event in a series of events hosted by the Caucus, including the Chemistry of Electronics and the Chemistry of Agriculture.

Through events like these, the Chemistry Caucus provides opportunities for policymakers and industry leaders to convene, foster dialogue, and collaborate on pressing issues at the intersection of chemistry and society. The Caucus is co-chaired by Sen. Capito (R-WV); Sen. Coons (D-DE); Sen. Daines (R-MT); Sen. Peters (D-MI); Rep. Bishop (D-GA); Rep. Moolenaar (R-MI).
