Congressman Cohen Announces $11.4 Million to MLGW for July 2023 Storm Damage

MEMPHIS - Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced that Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) will receive $11,423,844 for the permanent repair of the electrical distribution system damaged by the straight-line wind storms of July 18-21, 2023. The figure represents the 75 percent federal share of the $15,231,792 in actual damage.

Congressman Cohen successfully sought a declaration of Major Disasterfrom President Biden in the days after the storms that did major damage to Shelby, Tipton, and Henry counties, triggering emergency federal assistance.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"Our region has been repeatedly ravaged by severe storms in recent years, and we're unfortunately seeing it again in a catastrophic way in the wake of Hurricane Helene. I am pleased to know that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is always ready to address these situations. Today's announcement shows that FEMA is also a reliable partner in reimbursing local entities for the damage done in these storms. With this assistance, MLGW will be prepared to meet local electric power needs."
