ECLAC Will Release New Figures on Poverty, Inequality and Social Spending in Latin America and the Caribbean

José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, the United Nations regional organization's Executive Secretary, will give a press conference on Tuesday, November 12 from Santiago to unveil the Social Panorama 2024 report, which has non-contributory social protection as its main theme.

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will present on Tuesday, November 12 its flagship annual report Social Panorama of Latin America and the Caribbean 2024: The challenges of non-contributory social protection in advancing towards inclusive social development, which includes the latest data available on poverty, income inequality and social spending in the region. This year's central theme is non-contributory social protection.

The main conclusions of the document - comprising four chapters - will be presented by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, ECLAC's Executive Secretary, at a hybrid press conference (in-person and virtual) due to be held at 11 a.m. local time in Santiago, Chile (UTC/GMT-3).

Chapter I of theSocial Panorama presents the evolution of poverty and income inequality in the context of the development crisis in which the region is mired.

Chapter II, meanwhile, analyzes the challenges and opportunities related to non-contributory social protection systems in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Chapter III of the publication addresses social protection's centrality in the context of the current care crisis and the trend of population ageing, while chapter IV examines the links between the institutional framework and social spending in the region.

Members of the media are invited to participate in person in the press conference.
